Enchanted Haven Horse Rescue is a non-profit facility nestled in lush farmland bordering the Choptank River in Ridgley, Maryland. Enchanted Haven was created through the vision of owner and founder Carlene Eaton, when she witnessed the growing number of neglected, abused and abandoned horses in Maryland. In 2006, Jewel’s Landing Farm, a private facility and home to top performance hunter horses, cherished equine friends and family pets opened its stalls to the first two rescued horses. Nearly ten years later Enchanted Haven has grown into, not only a haven for horses but for the people who love them as well. Carlene’s inspiration has given these majestic creatures another chance and has educated the public about the plight of these “unwanted horse”. Over the years, she has provided compassionate care and treatment more than 70 horses. Some of the rescued horses have found forever homes, some have become foster care horses, and others have remained as permanent friends and instruction horses at Enchanted Haven. Sadly, a few of the rescued horses were in such deplorable condition when they arrived that they succumbed to their neglect and abuse. Here at Enchanted Haven it is our mission to take the broken bodies, hearts, and spirits of our horses and provide them with another chance to become teachers, friends and companions to their human counterparts. Enchanted Haven has grown to include the training and the re-training of horses, English and Western riding instruction, after school programs, community outreach, equine assisted learning/therapy, programming for children with special needs, family retreats, and parent/child programs. Recently the Maryland Department of Agriculture in conjunction with the Maryland Horse Industry Board certified Enchanted Haven as an “Equine Experience Center.” The center will offer hands-on and educational opportunities for those who wish to learn more about horse ownership as well as for those who have a desire to rekindle their past equine experiences. Enchanted Haven is also the 2014 recipient of the Rural Business Enterprise Grant. This grant provides yet another opportunity to encourage and support local employment and economic development in Caroline County.
